The 1st Free French Division took up position south of Strasbourg on 31 December 1944 and, in very harsh climatic conditions, participated in the defense of the Alsatian capital, threatened by the German counter-offensive launched two weeks earlier. Strasbourg was narrowly saved, but a marching battalion (BM 24) was annihilated at Obenheim.
