Carnival: cavalcades and masked balls: atmosphere guaranteed!

Grand Ried Carnival
Carnival in Central Alsace is much more than a celebration: it's a tradition deeply rooted in local history, a true institution that transforms winter into a season of joy and celebration. Officially launched on November 11 at 11:11 a.m., this festive period extends through March, marked by parades, balls, and unique rituals.

An ancestral and friendly tradition

As the days lengthen and the nights become milder, Alsace enters the throes of carnival. Inspired by their German neighbors in Baden-Württemberg and German-speaking Switzerland, the towns and villages of Bas-Rhin transform into festive scenes where costumes and laughter are the watchwords. Chasing away winter while having fun becomes a collective mission.

Highlights of the Alsatian carnival

Rosenmontag (Rose Monday)

The Monday before Shrove Tuesday is a highlight of the festivities, particularly in Sundhouse, where businesses close to allow everyone to participate. Daytime and nighttime parades enchant the streets, and the atmosphere is at its peak.

Children's carnival

The youngest children also have their own parade! They roam the village in search of sweets, reviving the community spirit (usually the day before the big parade).

An intergenerational celebration

Beyond the festivities, the Alsatian carnival is a serious matter for the locals. Costumes are carefully crafted, and participants sometimes take time off to fully enjoy this unique period. It's a time of cultural transmission, particularly during the children's parades, which ensure the longevity of this festive tradition. Between folklore, conviviality, and exuberance, the carnival in Wittisheim, Hilsenheim, Sundhouse, Bindernheim, and Rhinau offers a joyful interlude at the end of winter. Floats, costumes, music, and ancient rituals combine to celebrate life, friendship, and the impending arrival of spring.
